Chasing Those Clouds: 70/30 vs. 80/20 VG/PG E-Liquid Ratios

If there’s one thing that most sub-ohm vapers desire more than anything else, it’s those thick, enormous clouds of vaping glory.  Vapers go to a lot of trouble to buy the right hardware to increase their abilities to chase beautiful clouds all day long.

In addition to choosing the right hardware, there’s one factor that has a lot to do with how big and puffy those clouds will be, and it’s the ratio of e-liquid that they’re vaping.  The ratio refers to the balance between vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG), too ingredients found in every vape juice.  Many inexperienced vapers tend to grossly underestimate just how much this ratio impacts many aspects of their overall vaping experience.

The two most common ratios for freebase e-liquid are 80/20 and 70/30, with the first number being VG, and the second being PG.  So, which one is more conducive to chasing impressive clouds all day long? Allow us to help you figure that out.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG)

Vegetable glycerin is a sticky, thick and relatively slimy substance that is derived from plants.  It’s a humectant, meaning it attracts water molecules, and it’s used in everything from skincare products to commercial foods.  It’s also one of the main ingredients in e-liquid.

See, vegetable glycerin is needed to provide balance to the formula.  Because of its thickness, it prevents e-liquid from burning when heat is applied to it.  Without it, vape juice would evaporate like water.

Because of the thickness of vegetable glycerin, it’s great for chasing clouds.  That’s because the thicker the e-liquid, the thicker the clouds. Pretty simple, right?

Propylene Glycol (PG)

Propylene glycol is the other ingredient that’s in every vape juice.  It’s also a commonly used ingredient, found in oral healthcare products, commercial foods, beauty products and more.  Propylene glycol, unlike vegetable glycerin, is relatively thin, and it’s not very viscous. What it does is thin out the consistency of vape juice so that it doesn’t clog the coil.  Besides, vape juice can’t be too thick, or else it will not evaporate at the proper rate in order to become vapor that can be inhaled.

As a rule of thumb, the thinner the vape juice, the thinner the clouds.  Therefore, you can now understand that the higher the propylene glycol content, the smaller and thinner your clouds will be.

Does One Ratio Give You Better Cloud-Chasing Abilities Compared to the Other?

Now, let’s get back to determining which ratio will give you bigger clouds.  Given the information above, you can understand why the 80/20 ratio will give you bigger clouds than the 70/30 ratio.  Like we said, the more vegetable glycerin, the more impressive the clouds, because VG is thicker, and so it makes the clouds thicker as well.

In fact, there are vape juices that have max VG ratios, which means that they contain as much vegetable glycerin as possible to ensure that the clouds can be as big and dense as can be without losing the ability to be properly vaporized.

So, if 80/20 ratios provide bigger clouds, why would anyone want anything with less VG?  Well, not everyone wants big clouds above all else. For instance, the more PG in an e-liquid, the stronger the flavor will be, and the stronger the throat will be as well.  Some vapers prefer a strong throat hit or a bold flavor over cloud-chasing abilities.

Ratios and Salt Nic Vaping

Now, we want to point out that these ratios don’t really apply to salt nic vape juices.  Salt nic vape juices tend to come in ratios of 50/50 VG/PG, and for good reason. Salt nic vape juices are used with pod mods, and pod mods are low wattage devices that really aren’t conducive to cloud-chasing.  So, a high VG salt nic e-liquid would not give you the big clouds that you want. 

Other Ways to Maximize Those Clouds

If you want to be a cloud chaser, there are other ways in which you can maximize your setup besides buying high VG vape juices.  For one thing, we recommend going with sub-ohm coils and high wattage levels as this combination allows more e-liquid to be vaporized at a time.  Additionally, the lower the nicotine strength of your juice, the thicker and larger your clouds will be, because nicotine thins out the liquid.

So, we understand why vapers want to do everything they can to ensure that their setup allows for the thickest and largest clouds imaginable.  Besides buying the right hardware, choosing the perfect vape juice ratio is key. As you can see, the higher the amount of vegetable glycerin in your e-liquid, the larger and thicker your clouds will be.  Now, you can buy your e-liquid accordingly.
